How to Reduce PDF Size to 100KB or 200KB for Online Forms

Getting a "file too large" error while uploading a PDF? Here is how to bring your file under 100KB, 200KB or 500KB and keep it readable.

Updated: November 2026 · Antokia Guide

Many online forms, scholarship portals, bank websites and job applications accept PDF files only below a limit such as 100KB, 200KB or 500KB. A scanned document from a phone is often several MB, so the upload fails with a "file too large" message. The good news is that most documents can be reduced a lot without becoming unreadable.

Quick answer: Open the Compress PDF tool, upload your file, compress it, and check the new size. If it is still too big, remove pages you do not need with Remove PDF Pages, or rescan the document at a lower resolution.

Why Are PDF Files So Large?

A PDF made from typed text is usually small. A PDF made from photos or scans is large because every page is stored as a picture. The size depends mostly on three things: the number of pages, the resolution of each image and the amount of colour.

Step-by-Step: Reduce PDF Size

Step 1: Check the limit and note the current size

Read the upload rule on the form (for example 200KB) and check your file size in the file properties.

Step 2: Remove pages you do not need

If you uploaded a long file but the form needs only two pages, delete the rest. Fewer pages is the easiest way to reduce size.

Step 3: Compress the PDF

Use the Compress PDF tool. It reduces the quality of the images inside the PDF. Your file is processed in your browser.

Step 4: Check readability

Open the new file and zoom in. Text, numbers and stamps must still be clear. Portals can reject a document that cannot be read.

Step 5: Retry with a different method if needed

If it is still above the limit, scan again in black and white or grayscale at a lower resolution and then compress.

What Size Can You Expect?

Results depend on the file, so these are only general ideas.

Tip: If your PDF came from photos, compress or resize the photos first and then create the PDF with Image to PDF. This often gives a smaller file than compressing afterwards.
